Saint's open regular season w/ a Win...

Posted Monday, March 31, 2008 by Saint's Reporter

The Saint's started their regular season with a close victory over visiting Kennedy Kenrick by a score of 2-1.

It was an old fashion pitching duel between Kenrick's "Spera" and the Saint's (Sophmore) Mark Donato.

The story of the day was (Sophmore) Mark Donato who was 2 for 3 at the plate and pitched a complete game, giving up only one run on 3 hits and striking out 11 batter's.

Donato started off a little ruff in the first inning and had trouble finding the strike zone. He walked 3 batters and struck out the fourth before walking the next batter to account for Kenrick's only run of the game.

The Saint's were pretty strong today on the Defensive side of the ball and had some problems on the Offensive side of the ball, only registering 5 hit's. Three of which came in the final two innings.

The Saint's scored their first run in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the game. With 1 out, Donato hit a double down the 1st base line and was replaced on the bases by (Freshman) Dominic Riverso who scored on a sharply hit single to center field by (Junior) Joseph Armata who was thrown out at 2nd while attempting to get into scoring positon.

In the bottom half of the 7th inning with the game tied at 1, (Junior) Blaze Cedrone lead off with a walk and moved up to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt by (Sophmore) Reno Regalbuto. (Junior) Billy Fulginiti then drew a walk and Kenrick decided to intentionally walk Pinch-hitter, (Sophmore) Michael Riverso. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Kenrick had to play with their infielders in to try to stop the winning run from scoring. (Senior) Dan Behlau stepped up to the plate and worked the count full. Then with a 3-2 pitch, Behlau hit a rocket towards the shortstop who could not make the play on the ball which scored Cedrone for the winning run.

The Saint's close out their series at Kennedy Kenrick on Wednesday, April 2nd at 3:45pm.
